Museum
The Anahuacalli Museum hosts the impressive collection of 50,000 idols and pre-Hispanic figures that belonged to Diego Rivera, which he humorously called “el idolaje”. The painter originally used to store this collection in the Casa Azul in Coyoacán that he where he lived with Frida Kahlo. In 1941, Diego Rivera undertook the construction that we now know as the ANAHUACALLI MUSEUM to house his pieces and to create an habitable work of art. The museum was built with volcanic stone coming from the eruption of Xitle volcano and sought to combine modern art with pre-Columbian cosmogony and aesthetics. The beautiful flora and fauna that surround the site inspired the painter to create a temple for ancient, and at the same time, contemporary art.
