We are born, and within us history resides. Everything that is named with pride, and also everything that remains unspoken and weighs heavily. We inherit mythologies, duties, and sometimes—if we are lucky—a sense of purpose. Leonardo’s great-grandfather was the first Luis in his family. His grandfather, the second, was a carpenter. And it is thanks to the devoted craft of working with wood that the fourth Luis was able to perceive tenderness in the moments of learning he shared with his father. An affection that disguises itself in symbols such as work, simply because it is what must be done.Working with what is natural teaches us to be patient and flexible. It reminds us that we will become ancestors-- one more layer in the bark of this Earth. And for this reason, we must honor it and place ourselves at its service. In truth, what we choose to be while we live matters deeply.
