Arte Expuesto presents Fragment-whole, an exhibition by Marcela Gottardo as part of the month's exhibition route.
My intention with my art is to create a space, a parentheses of time, for being. Unlike creating time as space, I make space as time, thinking of gravity as the principle.
For the exhibition with Arte Expuesto, I explored ideas about origin, space, time, and memory departing from what is at hand, the digital billboard. I thought of them as a site for installation rather than a site to display an image. Digital billboards exercise the function of advertising in public areas. Digitally, they exist as a space of machines, an artificial coded space.
Those exterior and interior spaces helped me define the choice for the images.
The photographs chosen are records of fragments of matrixes, negatives in plaster, records in themselves of elementary actions and gestures performed in clay.
The act of touching clay refers to the tactile sensing fundamental to grounding our bodies in meditative traditions. Touching is also a primary sense for me in sculpture. Sensing is the origin. The root of presence that we came to know through memory. Memory is a perceptual record.
