Plataforma presents the exhibition Auspicious Accidents by Ghada Amer, curated by José Noé Suro.
Ghada Amer's (b. 1963, Cairo, Egypt) unexpected love affair with ceramics began in February 2018 during a trip to Mexico, specifically to Ceramica Suro. Initially a painter, Amer found the unpredictability of glaze frustrating, often leading to unforeseen breakages in her large pieces during firing. However, each mishap birthed a new opportunity for artistic exploration. Despite her novice status in ceramics, Amer's background in painting imbued her ceramic plates with a mural-like quality, intended for wall display akin to painted canvases. Rejecting the notion of colorless ancient sculptures, she meticulously selects vibrant hues to revive the tradition of richly decorated artwork. The material dialogue within Auspicious Accidents invites us to witness the intrinsic alliance between curiosity and pleasure leading to discovery. In this set of spontaneous incidents and collaborative endeavors, Ghada Amer continues to defy artistic boundaries, forging a path of innovation and creativity in ceramics and beyond.
