Karian Amaya

The Government of Guadalajara, through the Coordinación General de Construcción de Comunidad, the Department of Culture, and the Museo Raúl Anguiano (MURA), invites you to the exhibition Tierra desnuda by artist Karian Amaya, presented at the MURA.

Tierra desnuda is the result of research developed by the artist during her graduate studies in the Master’s Program in Education and Expression for the Arts (MEEPA) at the University of Guadalajara.

The project begins with a marble quarry located in San Diego de Alcalá, Chihuahua, to explore the relationship between sculpture, the post-industrial landscape, and the expanded field. As part of this research, Amaya carried out a sculptural action at the quarry itself: a block of marble was relocated and returned to the landscape from which it had been extracted, proposing a gesture that symbolically reverses the extractive process and shifts sculpture from the museum into the territory.

The exhibition brings together documentation of this intervention through video projections, photogravures, archival material, a marble slab engraved with text, and glass sculptures containing mineral fragments from the same quarry. Together, these works construct a poetics of the post-industrial landscape, where matter becomes a testimony to the transformations that shape the territory and to the relationships between geology, industry, and sculpture.

Karian Amaya (Chihuahua, Mexico, 1986)
Through sculpture, her artistic practice examines the dialogues and tensions that emerge between the exploitation of natural resources, the transformation of landscapes, and the social and territorial contexts they produce. Influenced by Land Art and postminimalism, her work is developed through formal and narrative encounters between natural and industrial materials. She has been a recipient of the National System of Art Creators (SNCA) 2025–2028, participated in the New York Foundation for the Arts Immigrant Artist Mentoring Program (2015), and has completed residencies at Residency Unlimited (New York), Calla Alliance/PAOS–ASU Art Museum (Phoenix), and Fundación Casa Wabi. Her work has been presented at venues including the El Paso Museum of Art, Museo Ex Convento del Carmen, Museo Casa Redonda, Museo de Arte de Ciudad Juárez, Museo de las Artes (MUSA), and Museo de San Ildefonso, among others.
