Ira Lombardía’s line of inquiry has remained steadfast in what we might now call the post-photographic direction, yet it transcends all categorization. Her methodology stems from the systematic questioning of hegemonic paradigms: those inherited from Enlightenment thought, European postmodernity, and poststructuralism, which have pervaded contemporary artistic practice to the point of rendering it lifeless; but also from political models, more or less sophisticated, designed to preserve the established power structures. These models are rooted in a Darwinian, capitalist, patriarchal, and hierarchical vision of society. They manifest in the exploitation of the earth and the sea, of women, and of individuals from the Global South, who are also framed as resources.
