Yvonne Venegas

LTRL presents Drama Mexicano, the new photographic series by artist Yvonne Venegas, a close look at theatrical spaces and actors in Mexico City. This marks her first solo exhibition with the gallery.

After working with actors in her previous projects, Venegas turns her attention to the spaces these bodies inhabit—where they learn, rehearse, refine their craft, and where performances take place. Seeking to connect photography and theater, she focuses on the idea that both meet in the present moment, exploring the documentary possibilities of this encounter as the project’s underlying core.

What emerges from her exploration of these black boxes and the use of dim light is darkness and shadow as a theme—sites where energy has been invested in the creation of fiction, along with the full range of human emotions and the transformative potential of this pursuit. The portraits included in the exhibition evoke moments that could belong to fictional narratives, rehearsals, or theatrical archives, revealing other forms of darkness.
