As part of the parallel activities of Salón—the inaugural exhibition of Solar Tacubaya, an independent space founded by artists Omar Rodríguez-Graham and Morgana Ludlow—visual artist and music enthusiast Omar Barquet (A.K.A. DJ Ejkiujmi) presents a unique exercise that interweaves music and image.
Inspired by the 60 works that make up the exhibition, Barquet created a free and personal audiovisual curation: a “musical journey” that responds to the languages, techniques, materials, and imaginaries of each piece.
Starting from the visual references of each artwork—many by artists he does not personally know—he selected record covers from his vinyl collection that resonate with the works, guided as well by titles, themes, and atmospheres. He then chose tracks, lyrics, or instrumental pieces that build a topographical soundscape, with valleys, peaks, tunnels, and moments of eclectic reverie.
The result is a five-hour playlist spanning genres such as jazz, ambient, IDM, experimental music, drum and bass, trip hop, electro, rock, soul, spoken word, and world music. This selection not only complements the exhibition—which brings together multiple anthropological, mystical, historical, political, material, and abstract approaches to landscape—but also offers a new reading through sound, gifting each artist a musical “present” evoked by their work.
In addition, on Saturday, March 28, from 12:00 to 17:00, Omar Barquet will host a vinyl listening session featuring the 60 selected tracks, open to the public at Solar Tacubaya.
The playlist is available on Spotify and will be shared after the session so visitors can walk through the exhibition with headphones, pairing their favorite works with their corresponding soundtrack.
Salón invites audiences to explore disciplinary crossings and multiple readings; with this proposal, Omar Barquet introduces music as a new language through which to inhabit and experience the exhibition.
