Ian Grose

The South African artist based in Cape Town, Ian Grose, explores the possibilities of painting in Goodbye Ebony Horse, employing  a quasi-theatrical idiom in order to synthesise elements of inspiration from a variety of sources. The title is taken from a story in The Thousand and One Nights, in which a magical carved horse grants its owner the power of flight -- and is ultimately destroyed. In Grose’s practice, this act becomes a reflection on our ambivalent relationship with wonder, power, and change, rendered through light, intimacy, and the quiet strangeness of the painted image.
