Ground Rules by Alejandro Cartagena

Patricia Conde Gallery will present the book Ground Rules, the first comprehensive and fully bilingual survey of the work of renowned photographer Alejandro Cartagena.

Known for seminal photobooks such as Carpoolers (2014) and A Small Guide to Homeownership (2020), Cartagena has developed a practice defined by images of great formal rigor and sharp social incisiveness, addressing suburban sprawl, U.S.–Mexico border politics, and the widening of economic inequalities in North America.

The publication brings together documentary photography, collage, appropriated vernacular images, and AI-generated works, all unified by Cartagena’s precise visual language and his ability to approach some of Mexico’s most pressing social and environmental issues with humor and pathos.

Published on the occasion of Cartagena’s mid-career solo exhibition at the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, on view from November 2025 to May 2026. Following the presentation, attendees are invited to join the gallery’s annual celebratory brunch.
