Alma Colectiva presents the Open Studio of Andrea Henning, the first artist to participate in its new artist residency program. Andrea’s multidisciplinary, gesture-driven practice includes sculpture, painting, expanded drawing, performance, ceramics, and photography. Her creative approach is grounded in material experimentation that goes beyond the manipulation of surface. She develops an intimate relationship with matter by acknowledging its energetic force and singularity. In doing so, Andrea questions the porous nature between the human and the nonhuman, between the self and the world, as well as the limits and boundaries we create and accept.
Her daily practice of walking becomes an opening toward the “found” and toward the cultural icons that define a place. The discovery may manifest as a tangible object or as an intuitive whisper that leads to creation; matter and intuition guide the process, and understanding comes afterward.
Andrea was born in Regina, Saskatchewan, and after a career in nursing and public service, she received her MFA from Emily Carr University in 2022. Her work is part of private collections in North America and Europe.
