El Universo de Sofia Bassi

The Universe of Sofia Bassi brings together more than 40 paintings and drawings by the Mexican surrealist painter Sofia Bassi. Presented at Georgina Pounds Gallery’s 1911 space, located in Roma Norte, the exhibition is the largest show dedicated to Bassi’s work to date.

Bassi is remembered for her almost fantastical narratives and her references to imaginary worlds, through which she boldly explored surrealism, symbolism, and the human condition. She began painting while imprisoned in Acapulco, an experience that profoundly influenced her introspective and imaginative approach to art. Like other surrealist artists, Bassi felt a deep fascination with the subconscious, transformation, and the cycles of life and death—themes that run through her dreamlike and richly symbolic compositions.
