Something smells bad

SUELO presents the open studio by Alejandra Villa, curated by Gracia Doré Luevanos.

Every home contains a system of smells that defines it. In Chihuahua, this system takes on a particular nuance—a blend of yeast and sunlight. The kitchen emerges as the core of this atmosphere, a living space where bonds, roles, and affections are articulated, but also where the wear of the everyday accumulates.

Alejandra Villa’s work is situated between memory and materiality. Through the accumulation and reconfiguration of objects, the artist activates devices that function as receptacles of remembrance. Within them appear both idealized images of the domestic —sewing processes, the smell of freshly made empanadas— and their fractures: that which unsettles, decays, and ceases to be habitable.

During her stay at SUELO, the kitchen unfolds as a techno space: a site of production and experimentation, but also a territory traversed by historical inertia—labor dynamics marked by repetition, isolation, and the imposition of roles.

Through painting, object-based art, and ceramics, Villa deactivates the functionality of everyday objects, shifting them into the realm of representation. This gesture not only challenges their original use, but also reveals the affective and symbolic structures that sustain them. In this way, she proposes a critical reading of the domestic as a space where care, memory, and wear coexist.
