Sobremesa

Mi niña

Exhibition

-> Nov 19 2024 – Nov 23 2024

Galería Nueva presents its first exhibition in Mexico, the group show Mi niña, organized by the Sobremesa collective and curated by Silvia González, with works by Adriana Rodríguez Zamudio, Agustina Marani, A Fellow (Angela Ramírez Fellowes), Ariadna Polo Garfias, Betina Rincón, Eileen Burgos, Elena Morin, Mariana Róo and Sofía Serrato.

Mi niña is the result of the first edition of Sobremesa's residency program. This proposal brings together a group of nine women of different ages, backgrounds and professions to re-interpret and materialize the meaning of being a girl.

Through this program, each resident approaches her childhood from an introspective point of view, where the traces of childhood become starting points to explore and question the memories, emotions and fragmented memories that constitute them.

This project intends to open a space for reflection to explore how each woman's childhood has been traversed by different contexts, experiences and social expectations. In Mi niña, memory becomes a flexible and personal mechanism, in which each participant not only remembers, but also rewrites, re-signifies and reconstructs her own history. This profound process of self-knowledge sometimes becomes a healing act, or an opportunity to confront a painful past.

Mi niña shows that our childhood does not die; it remains in us, sometimes as a powerful flame, other times as a fleeting flash, but always present. Why should we say goodbye to them?

This exhibition is, in essence, a space to rethink childhood from a broad, complex and diverse perspective, where participants can redraw their personal and collective history. Mi niña is not only a tribute to childhood itself, but also a way to give voice to those experiences that deviate from conventional narratives, allowing each woman, with her own gaze and process, to recognize and celebrate her inner child, without renouncing it or leaving it behind.

About the Sobremesa collective

Sobremesa is monthly and is carried out virtually, which allows global participation and a meeting without geographical barriers that usually limit this type of initiative. Each meeting is characterized by a flexible dynamic that may include dialogue and discussion sessions, conversations moderated by special guests, casual chats over a meal, workshops and project presentations, among others. This diversity of formats promotes an exchange of ideas where participants have the opportunity to share their creative processes and enrich the conversation.

In this way, Sobremesa is gradually becoming a living space for artistic exchange and critical reflection that seeks to redefine the present and open paths towards more inclusive, diverse and meaningful futures.
