As the result of Sneha Krishnan three-month residency at The Ant Project in Coyoacán, Answers in an Unknown Language came as a response to the artist’s reflections on the information stored in walls, aging cracks, moss, and our self-identity lived through our interaction with such places and learned in silent languages.
The two-story installation to be exhibited in Laguna Mx is an immersive exploration of life’s cycles—birth, death, and rebirth—while confronting the impact of colonial and patriarchal violence on the human experience.
Visitors are invited to journey through two symbolic spaces: the Temple of Birth and the Pyre of Death. In the Temple of Birth, the walls bear witness to the memories of those who lived before us. These walls hold stories of love, loss, and joy, but also of violence and oppression. They store the echoes of colonial and patriarchal power, shaping generations and leaving a lasting imprint on the human spirit.
In the Pyre of Death, the certainty of mortality is laid bare, yet alongside it is the promise of transformation. The pyre, a symbol of both death and renewal, suggests that in destruction lies the potential for rebirth. Dancing spirits throughout the space evoke this possibility, representing the hope for renewal even in the face of historical trauma.
Throughout the exhibit, visitors are encouraged to listen to the answers that emerge from the stories inscribed in the walls—truths spoken in an unknown language. These answers, elusive yet present, remind us that the legacies of the past are still with us, shaping who we are and how we move through the world.
