The Common Fiber

AGO Projects, the collectible design gallery based in Mexico City, presents the summer exhibition The Common Fiber, showcasing pieces by the design studio Rrres (Javier Reyes) and textiles designed by Natalia Tannenbaum.

The catalyst for this presentation and collaboration between the designers is the desire to bring visibility to the collective creative process, thus celebrating traditional production techniques mediated by contemporary visions regarding the use of textiles and fibers. Conscious of the importance of working in community, both creatives understand the generative power it enables to delve into the new codes that intertwine in the representation and interpretation of handmade design.

The participation of Rrres, the creative studio led by Dominican designer Javier Reyes and based in Oaxaca, encompasses fiber pieces inspired by classical vessels that have evolved into monumental-scale lamps for this exhibition. Since its launch in Mexican territory, Rrres has worked with local communities to create design objects that reflect the ancient tradition of weaving and transforming palm into objects.

Natalia Tannenbaum presents seven woven and embroidered pieces created in collaboration with communities in the southern part of Mexico. Signed by each weaver, these designs are inspired by 20th-century American quilts and serve as a celebration of individual creativity through the use of loose fabrics and repetitive patterns, resulting in subtle and tactile canvases. The intense process of quilting and joining involves immense hours of individual labor, which is visually imbued in the pieces.

La Fibra en Común is the link between these creative and collaborative processes involving the exhibitors and the gallery itself as a celebratory venue.
