Art House presents Persona, a group exhibition curated by Carlos Algara.
Persona is an exercise in identity. The artists whose works are shown in this exhibition all share a clear outpouring of their personalities in their pieces. And without it, their works would not have the insight that they have.
With works by: Michael Mapes, Martine Johanna, Taeko Nomiya, Alantl Molina and Paulina Camu.
It is said that an artist inevitably projects pieces of himself into his work. Whether it is a portrait, an abstraction, or a surreal scene, the artistic event involves the cannibalization of the ego. And each of the artists who are part of this exhibition is a clear example of this. Michael Mapes' collages are genetic, cultural and sociological maps of the subjects he chooses to portray. Their obsessive and detailed construction speaks more about the artist than about the work. Martine Johanna's surreal and figurative pieces resemble alternative versions of herself, evoking bold, and sometimes foreboding, narratives. Taeko Nomiya's double exhibitions seek to reflect an identity composed of two nationalities, two heritages that end up hiding a liminal personality. In the case of the fauxtograms of Alantl Molina and Paulina Camu, fiction becomes truth the moment we choose to believe it even if we know it to be false.
Molina's eye tells no more truth or lies than the texts written by Camu. And the tepeyac usto, victim of the arbitrariness of the virtual platforms that control the current music market, is no less Alantl Molina than any of his multiple personalities. This is what you are invited to witness. Look at the pieces from afar, admire their immediate appeal, but then get closer, try to find the essence of the artists who made them... you may realize that some are not the person you imagined.
