today open 11:00AM 6:00PM

Lateral presents the individual exhibition Actos de imagen/ Acts of Image by Mariela Sancari.

Actos de imagen/ Image Acts refer to meaning phenomena that attempt to consider images as relational processes rather than as stable and fixed elements; They are not, they happen, that is, they do not pre-exist the event of the relationship.

Through the movements learned in a feminist self-defense manual, I try to focus on the meeting space between my body and the world, a space that the thinker Laura Tripaldi calls interface and defines like this: “it is not an imaginary line that separates bodies. from each other, but rather a material region, a border zone endowed with mass and thickness and characterized by properties that make it radically different from the bodies that produce it when they meet.”

Actos de imagen/ Image Acts names a transit, a practice with images and other elements that materialize their relationships in an act. Images as nodes within assemblages, which are not intended to stand alone but with others, in multiple and diverse associations that are not exhausted, that is, they remain available for new encounters.

Mariela Sancari (Buenos Aires, Argentina, 1976). She has lived and worked in Mexico City since 1997. Her work uses personal narratives to explore the limits of photography's reach as a means of representation. Her work refers to both the affective – although not sentimental – dimension of autobiographical work, as well as formal explorations of the medium, through questions related to staging, self-referentiality in photographic practice and its mechanisms of meaning.

She is the founder of FOLIO, the public collection of photobooks at the Image Center in Mexico City. She has published three (photo) books: Moisés (La Fábrica, 2015 / 2nd. Self-published edition, 2022), Mr. & Dr. (This books is true, 2017) in collaboration with the writer Adolfo Córdova and The horse with two heads . Representation in ten acts (Asunción Casa Editora, 2021).
