De oído
Exhibition
-> Feb 7 2023 – Mar 25 2023
Le laboratoire presents the dual exhibition De oido presented by Manuel Rocha Iturbide and Roberto Turnbull.
The exhibition De oido is an artistic dialogue between two great figures of the current Mexican scene, Manuel Rocha Iturbide and Roberto Turnbull, sparked by their friendship and deep interest in each other.
Its purpose is to cross the disciplinary boundaries between music and the visual arts, in a playful synesthesia that addresses and relates shapes, objects and colors with tones and auditory metaphors, an imaginary and empathetic eye / ear game.
Manuel Rocha Iturbide is a composer, sound artist, researcher and curator. Represented since 2011, he has had four individual exhibitions at the Le Laboratoire gallery and participated in more than 25 group shows coordinated by it.
For his part, Roberto Turnbull is a painter and engraver. Represented since 2010, he has also had four solo shows and contributed to more than 20 group shows.
On the occasion of his third individual exhibition at the gallery, titled] entre [and curated by Barbara Perea in 2016, Manuel Rocha Iturbide carried out “a series of operations aimed at disrupting the meaning of inert objects. (...) One of the "crucified" instruments turned out to be a dismantled piano-mandala that operated(was) like a Duchampian machine of multiple bachelors and multiple girlfriends (Transmutation). With Empty Piano, a multi-part installation, Rocha Iturbide completed his trilogy on iconic instruments in the History of Music (Extended Tension; Cruci-fiction), making reference both to John Cage's prepared pianos and to the ramming and dismantling so present in Fluxus”. The X-rays derived from the actions carried out with Roberto Turnbull during the same exhibition _ and repeated as performances during the ZONA MACO 2017 fair _ emphasized the intention of the diagnosis of a “revived instrument” and marked the first true collaboration between the two artists.
For the exhibition De oido, the artists decided to bring together several bodies of work: some recent paintings by Roberto, and some sound sculptures and object paintings by Manuel. To complete the exercise, they made some engravings in Roberto's Tokio Workshop.
