Magdalena Fernández

Obra abierta

Galería RGR presents the show Obra abierta by artist Magdalena Fernández (Caracas, Venezuela, 1964).

Magdalena Fernández, brought up between Caracas and Milan during the debates on postmodernism and post humanism, has embraced geometric abstraction and constructivism through her art practice, always looking to renovate its materials. By comprehending abstraction as a historical discourse subjected to expansions, modifications, and restorations, Magdalena has dedicated herself to establishing a formal bond between it, and recent analog and digital mediums. Thus, the artist has sought to undo sculpture, painting and the moving image, with the intention of constructing real or virtual spaces. Furthermore, in her approach to three-dimensionality, she has explored negative space and the vectors and interstices which unfold and open the work of art to a polysemic dimension.

In Obra abierta —whose title alludes to the concept of «opera aperta» formulated by semiologist Umberto Eco in the early 1960s— we present a group of monotypes, drawings, and paintings by the artist, as well as an immersive installation that will occupy the central space in the gallery. The pieces dwell in the trajectory of the bodies in movement until disintegration, and invite the public to consider the work as a poetic field in which all meaning is possible.
