Hilda Palafox

A una palma de distancia

In the exhibition titled A una palma de distancia, Hilda Palafox delves into the human connection through the representation of bodies in motion and explores the manifestation of silence and sound within the pictorial space. Through her most recent body of work, the artist continues her inquiry into the depiction of the human figure in painting, placing it at the center while simultaneously integrating it into both exterior landscapes and interior spaces. The presence of the body in each piece becomes evident through the almost sculptural monumentality of her figures—an approach Palafox employs to engage in dialogue with pictorial and sculptural references from Mexican modernism, using proportion and volume, primarily defined by light and shadow.

Color is another fundamental element in Palafox’s practice, as she deploys a palette that transitions from ochres and various shades of green and yellow to a broad spectrum of blue hues. The exhibition includes small, medium, and large-scale paintings, where movement is conveyed not only through the bodies of the figures depicted but also through the visible brushstrokes that define the rhythm of her process—a slow, delicate, and subtle pace.

Additionally, the exhibition features a medium-format pastel drawing in which fragmentation and color refraction create a dynamic visual experience. As art historian Rebeca Barquera notes, Palafox’s work reclaims the representation of femininity through exposed figures that evoke murmurs and the free exchange of pulsations between bodies.
