Conversation | Hybridizations – ORLAN + Aurora Noreña and Rodrigo Torres Ramos

Thursday, February 8: 7:30 p.m.

Within the framework of art week, Terreno Baldío Arte presents a meeting with the French artist ORLAN and the Mexican artist Aurora Noreña in conversation with Rodrigo Torres Ramos, curator of the exhibition.

This exhibition, conceived in dialogue with six national artists, addresses the concept of hybridization as a tool for critical and substantial reflection on our origins and current questions.

Presenting “Mayan Self-Hybridations”, a series of 14 photographs in which ORLAN mixes her own corporality with objects and sculptures representative of the Mayan lithic, the exhibition analyzes the intersections of body, sacredness, sexuality, gender and beauty, central themes for the artist and developed by more than five decades of uninterrupted production.

With the expectation of making these questions more complex and situated, the exhibition incorporates the work of Demián Flores, Javier Hinojosa, Karla Leyva, Ileana Moreno, Aurora Noreña and Ernesto Solana, artists who share the interest in expanding the discursive possibilities of Mesoamerican plastic arts. Thus, topics such as the wellness and care industry, fashion, anthropological sciences, collecting and nationalist narratives are revisited to update, tension and dismantle the narratives imposed throughout history.

The exhibition carried out in collaboration with Fundación La Cúpula, in Mérida, the French Embassy in Mexico and IFAL and the Museum of Popular Art is free of charge and can be visited from Monday to Thursday from 11am to 6pm and Fridays and Saturdays from 11am to 4pm.
