Art Latinou presents Zoom Out by Helena Garza and Emilio Morales. Curated by Yuriko Cortés.
Have you ever reflected on what the remnants of the future might be? Science fiction divides into two possibilities: a world without humans, where nature reclaims and embraces everything in its path, and another where we continue to exist, inhabiting through a new culture. My prediction is not far-fetched, as it would take only 100 years without our presence in this world for few traces to survive. A near 2125…
In the work of Morales and Garza, the depicted images draw us into that feeling known as the uncanny valley, a concept popularized by Masahiro Mori in 1970. This syndrome occurs when anthropomorphic replicas come too close to the appearance and behavior of a real human being, causing a sense of rejection in the observer—a feeling of repulsion and aversion to the unknown—leading to an unsettling sensation in which the human immediately activates a defense mechanism and experiences a void when confronted with the concept of mortality.
