Proyectos Monclova presents Symbiotes – an exhibition by Mexican painter Fernando Zarur, composed of paintings that allude to the natural and rural environment of the State of Mexico, a place in which the painter has developed during his life. For this project, the artist places emphasis on the hike, understood as a principle of recognition of diverse ecosystems that have been affected by urban growth, environmental pollution, the practice of monocultures, extraction and hunting.
As part of his artistic investigation, Zarur questions the way in which organisms (plants, animals, bacteria and fungi) and their multiple species generate exchanges and mutations to ensure survival through evolution, as well as the role of symbiosis in the Anthropocene epoch.
These reflections lead the artist to choose the qualities offered by nature in its capacity to form resistance as his starting point. At the same time, Zarur emphasizes the use of pictorial resources: the thickening of the brushstrokes, the transition of tones, the repetition of elements, the variations in rhythm and volume. The landscape in his work moves away from traditional iconography, in which open compositions and the horizon take on importance, and is closer to the visuality of micro-landscapes in which corporeality intertwines and shapes overlap.
