Proyectos Multipropósito presents '🖼' as its first proposal with the work of thirteen contemporary artists living and working in Mexico. The exercise consists of showcasing the role that landscape has played in forming our collective imaginary as well as creating and consolidating our identity. At the same time, it functions as a screenshot that allows us to visualize what this looks like in 2022.
What is it that calls us to return to the ideological and material exploration of something so totalizing and expansive that it seems to eat itself? The answers can range from an ecological urgency to the impulse to turn the mythological into new popular icons. These reflections situate the landscape as a palimpsest, a sum of all materiality and ideology of our modernity that is only successful when it is erased in order to reimagine itself. It does not seek to find universality in the landscape as this would be a false universality. The intention is to accept it as an important part of our optical universe, recognizing that it only exists thanks to a conglomerate of experiences.
