Ídolos tras los altares is a one-of-a-kind online exhibition that brings together over thirty works by seventeen contemporary artists that scrutinise the entanglements of cultural practices, question values and ways of knowing, and reclaim systems of belief. Steeped in the syncretism of the contemporary moment, their layered works create windows through which one can glimpse both what is hidden and what is revealed.
Drawing its title from Anita Brenner’s critical study Idols Behind Altars (1929)—which reflects upon transculturation and syncretism by way of exploring the use of signs and symbols to communicate both obvious and hidden meanings—this exhibition brings ritual, belief, mysticism, origin stories and contemporary culture together in works focused on the materiality and aesthetic qualities of objects, both ritualistic and quotidian. Evoking the sacred through aesthetic acts of resistance that reference the hidden messages that lie behind the adoring characters, totems and seemingly ancient relics, the artists involved are committed to parsing out the relationships, dialogues and intersections between the universal and the personal.
