Ángela Leyva

Black Bile

Exhibition

-> Feb 10 2022 – Feb 20 2022

Mooni presents the solo exhibition Bilis Negra by Ángela Leyva.

The portraits presented here arise from the reinterpretation and investigation of a clinical file belonging to Dr. Leyva. This file consists of the photographic record of different patients, mostly children, who present congenital alterations in their features.

The file was provided, under two conditions: 1) Not showing the patient by showing her identity and 2) Not having access to the clinical history of any of the patients.

It was the search to make these faces and stories understandable, which led the artist to work with paint, which is presented as the perfect medium for appropriation, where the transfer passes the structure of that being, of what was his soul. , so to speak, setting the tone for a new construction. Afterwards, oil and pigment provide the new flesh for these characters, sustaining them in the world of matter, as if bringing them back to life.

The result of this process is a series of somewhat blurred, veiled paintings. Paintings that show an "unfinished" or canceled process, which appeals and resonates with the weakness of the identity of a person previously archived.
