Founded as an art gallery in 2005 by Eduardo Mier y Terán, Terreno Baldío began its work two years earlier as an office for managing and cataloging exhibitions for Javier Marín, in a warehouse within the artist's studio. Javier Marín proposed expanding the project by inviting other colleagues to build, diversify, and enhance the management and commercialization efforts, forming a team of professionals to consolidate the artists' work through direct collaboration. Thus, Terreno Baldío was founded in response to the lack of support structures in the art field in Mexico at that time. In 2013, the gallery inaugurated its new space in a house from 1900 in the Colonia Roma, just a few blocks from its original location. Over the years, the gallery's exhibition program has expressed interest in design, fashion, architecture, public space, ecology, and community work.
