Kurimanzutto
Gallery
The Kurimanzutto gallery was founded in 1999 by Mónica Manzutto and José Kuri. It was Orozco who first proposed this project, with the objective to respond to the lack of support for young Mexican artists in the consolidation of their careers both in Mexico and abroad. The gallery started without a permanent exhibition space. Its itinerant condition and its collaborative functioning, as well as an effort to show, from its beginnings, the work of international artists and to present projects outside of Mexico, was what shaped and made the success of the gallery. In 2008, Kurimanzutto opened their current gallery space. Built in 1949, the building had previously housed a lumberyard, and afterwards, an industrial bakery. The architect Alberto Kalach designed and oversaw the building’s renovation, converting the bulk of the structure into a large uninterrupted exhibition space, while conserving the original wooden ceiling trusses and ample natural light. The gallery opened a space in New York in May 2018. Fifteen years after its creation, Kurimanzutto continues to operate in the same spirit that when it started: focusing on the artists and prioritizing creative innovation above all else.
