Eric Pérez is a visual artist. His training as a painter has been largely self-taught. He chose this practice as a suitable means to create worlds, to seek depth by drawing on imagination, and thus to exercise a subtle yet unmistakable form of resistance against the standardization of the world and of art. In his work, memory plays a fundamental role as a mental mechanism that fuses lived experiences, dreams, and fictions. His paintings set themselves apart from contemporary dogmatism—whose hegemony has not entirely disappeared and which deems traditional languages and media exhausted and redundant—while at the same time rejecting a purely formalist conception of painting. He has also been interested in representing special moments and the fleeting communication with nature and its forces, developing a personal system of symbolic representation made up of mental images nourished by memories, readings, dreams, and fictions. — Drexel
