El trópico penitenciario

MARCO presents El Trópico penitenciario, an exhibition organized and produced by the association Tecciztli, dedicated to providing spaces for artistic creation inside prisons.

The nearly 50 participants and authors of the works found in art a way of expression and hope.

The exhibition is divided into three projects, the first of which is Cielo concreto. Excarcelación mural, with a painting of 25 by 1.5 meters in which 13 women participated. Their idea was to capture a “beautiful sky different from the gray sky they face every day, not so much because of the landscape, but because of how they feel their existence has become: being deprived of their freedom, they use painting to materialize their desires and wishes.

Paloma negra. Soslayar la punición is the title of the performance that the participants created from a very specific observation of their environment: every day they are visited by pigeons, but they are free to leave whenever they want.

The third work is El trópico penitenciario, a performance in which Hoyos and Bañuelos dress up in prison clothes to represent the women's jail and dance with two eagles and a hawk, trying to imitate the movement of the birds.
