The documentary Tan cerca de las nubes, directed by Manuel Cañibe, revisits the story of the Mexican women’s national football team that played in the final of the 1971 Women’s World Cup before more than 110,000 spectators at Estadio Azteca. The film is directly connected to Sofía Echeverri’s work Sampler of Impediments (2025), commissioned for the exhibition Fútbol y Arte: Esa misma emoción.
Manuel Cañibe holds degrees in graphic design from Universidad Iberoamericana and in film directing from the Centro de Capacitación Cinematográfica (CCC). In 1995, he founded the graphic and audiovisual creation workshop ÉRAMOS TANTOS, through which he has co-produced several of his films. His medium-length documentary Five O’Clock Tea received an Ariel Award nomination in 2003. In 2014, he premiered his first feature documentary, El Silencio de la Princesa, in the official selection of the 12th Morelia International Film Festival, where it later received the José Rovirosa Award for Best Mexican Documentary of 2015. His most recent documentary,Tan cerca de las nubes, received the Ojo Award at the Morelia Festival in 2023 and, a year later, was nominated for an International Emmy in the category of Best Sports Documentary.
